Empire Builder: John D. Spreckels and the Making of San Diego
Winner of the 2021 San Diego Book AwardEmpire Builder is the previously untold story of a pioneer who almost singlehandedly transformed the bankrupt village of San Diego into a thriving city. When he first dropped anchor in San Diego Bay in 1887, John Diedrich Spreckels set into motion a series o
f events that later defined the city. Within just a few years, this son of the German immigrant Claus Spreckels, known as the "Sugar King," owned and controlled the majority of San Diego’s industry. After successfully building empires in sugar, shipping, and transportation and building development a
long the coast of California and across the Pacific, Spreckels rubbed shoulders with world leaders, successfully sued the U.S. government twice, and contributed to numerous educational, charitable, and cultural institutions in San Diego and San Francisco. Despite the fact that Spreckels created and
owned much of San Diego’s early twentieth-century infrastructure, his name is unknown to many contemporary San Diegans. Nobody could have foreseen that Spreckels’s empire would be all but forgotten in so short a time. Sandra E. Bonura strives to correct this oversight by providing a behind-the-scen
es look at Spreckels and his family’s role in business. This deeply researched biography paints a realistic portrait of cultural, economic, and political aspects of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century California.

All my life, I thought the grass was greener elsewhere.
I was born and bred in Kuala Lumpur, but spent the past four years in the United States. I loved it, and wanted so badly to stay — but alas, the U.S. government had different plans.
Upon returning to KL, I had difficulty re-integrating myself into our way of life. What had previously been second nature became a whole different creature. I missed the people, the infrastructure, the abundance of American living.
But then I took another look, and I realized my home had so many other things going for it. I bought a drone, picked up videography, and tried to show you what I see.
After 21 days of traveling, filming and editing, I present to you – Kuala Lumpur from above.
Playing tourist in my own city helped me see it through new eyes. We have so much untapped potential: The natural resources. The gorgeous skyscrapers. The rich heritage that is reflected in every building we see.
The grass isn’t greener elsewhere; we just need to see it from a different perspective.
I hope this video gives you just that.
Special thanks to Mark Lee for driving me all around KL, and Gwen Yi for helping me express this through words.
Selamat Hari Malaysia. ❤??
----
Disclaimer: Due to work and time constraints, I wasn’t able to feature all of KL’s architectures. But through this video and many to come next, I hope to bring the “Cuti-cuti Malaysia” tagline all over the world.
Malaysia deserves to be noticed.

Site Assessment and Remediation for Environmental Engineers
Dr. Cristiane (Cris) J. Q. Surbeck is a licensed Professional Engineer, Associate Dean, and faculty member of the School of Engineering at the University of Mississippi. She has worked in academia and environmental consulting. In the early part of her career in environmental consulting, her work inc
luded investigation, feasibility studies, design, construction, monitoring, and operation and maintenance of cleanup operations of soil and groundwater at contaminated sites; environmental due diligence assessment for manufacturing facilities; and stormwater monitoring programs, with projects throug
hout the U.S., Brazil, and Mexico. At UM, she teaches environmental and water resources engineering courses. Her research topics have ranged from microbial pollutant transport in water bodies, statistical methods for predicting pollutant occurrence, modeling of stormwater quantity and quality using
green infrastructure, and infrastructure sustainability. She led the university’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders on three trips to work on construction and well drilling projects in a rural village in Togo, West Africa. In 2015, she was elected to the Governing Board of the American Society of
Civil Engineers’ Environmental and Water Resources Institute (ASCE-EWRI) and served as its President from 2017 to 2018. She received a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Maryland, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of California, Irvine.Dr. J
eff (Jih-Fen) Kuo worked in environmental engineering industries for over ten years before joining the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at California State University, Fullerton, in 1995. Areas of research in environmental engineering include dechlorination of halogenated aromatics
by ultrasound, fines/bacteria migration through porous media, biodegradability of heavy hydrocarbons, surface properties of composite mineral oxides, kinetics of activated carbon adsorption, wastewater filtration, THM formation potential of ion exchange resins, UV disinfection, sequential chlorinati
on, nitrification/denitrification, removal of target compounds using nanoparticles, persulfate oxidation of persistent chemicals, microwave oxidation for wastewater treatment, landfill gas recovery and utilization, greenhouse gases control technologies, fugitive methane emissions from the gas indust
ry, and stormwater runoff treatment. He received a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from National Taiwan University, an M.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Wyoming, an M.S. in petroleum engineering, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of Southe
